Common display fridge faults, symptom by symptom
Display cabinets work harder than any other fridge on your premises: doors opening all day, lights on, warm shop air washing over an open front. These are the faults we get called to most, and what each one usually means.
Not holding temperature, even with the night blind up
An open-front multideck that creeps above 5°C usually has a condenser choked with dust, a tired evaporator fan, or an air curtain thrown out by stock stacked above the load line. Low refrigerant from a slow leak causes the same symptom. The food nearest the front edge suffers first, so check temperatures there, not just at the back.
Ice on the evaporator coil
Frost or a solid block of ice behind the back panel means the defrost cycle is not doing its job: a failed defrost heater, a timer or sensor that has stopped calling defrosts, or humid shop air getting in past a damaged seal. Do not chip the ice off, because a punctured coil turns a small repair into a dead cabinet. Switch off, let it defrost fully, and call us.
Fans noisy or stopped
Fan motors on display fridges run long hours and wear out. A rattle or buzz is your warning: the motor usually gives you days or weeks before it stops altogether and the cabinet warms up. Fan motors are a straightforward swap on most cabinets, and far cheaper than the compressor failure that follows if they are ignored.
Lighting failed or flickering
Customers buy less from a dark cabinet, and a patisserie display with failed lighting hides the products that sell on looks. Modern displays run LED strips and drivers that fail with heat and age; older ones run tubes and starters. We replace tubes, LEDs, drivers and switches, and check the wiring while the panel is off.
Condensation on the glass
Mist or droplets on glass doors and serve-over glass usually means a failed door or frame heater, a split gasket letting humid air in, or a cabinet running colder than it needs to. Summer humidity makes it worse. The fix is often a heater or a seal rather than anything on the refrigeration circuit.
Water on the floor
Every defrost produces meltwater, and it has to drain away. Most display leaks are a blocked condensate drain, a cracked or displaced evaporator tray, or a cabinet that is not level. We clear the drain, check the tray and the level, and run the cabinet through a defrost to confirm it drains where it should.
What our engineer does on a visit
Display faults are diagnosed, not guessed. A typical visit works through the cabinet in this order.
- Step 01
Measure first
We take cabinet and product temperatures, read the controller set point and differential, and confirm what the unit is actually doing before any panels come off.
- Step 02
Airflow and condenser
We clean the condenser, check both fan sets, and make sure the air curtain on open-front cabinets flows the way the manufacturer intended. Blocked grilles and stock over the load line are common culprits.
- Step 03
Refrigeration circuit
Gauges on, pressures checked against the rating plate, and the coil inspected for ice patterns and oil traces that point to a leak. Any refrigerant work is carried out by F-Gas certified engineers and recorded.
- Step 04
Report, then repair
You get the fault in plain English and the cost before any parts are fitted. Many display faults, fans, sensors, heaters, seals and lights, are fixed on the spot when the part is available.

Who we repair display fridges for
Anywhere food or drink sells from a chilled display, a breakdown shows immediately. Customers see the empty cabinet, and an EHO sees the temperature log. We look after displays for:
- Convenience stores and supermarkets
- Delis and farm shops
- Cafés and coffee shops
- Butchers and fishmongers
- Bakeries and patisseries
- Sandwich bars
- Florists with chilled displays
- Garden centre food halls
Serve-over counters need their own kind of care
A serve-over counter is really two machines: the refrigerated well under the display deck and the cooling coil behind the glass above it. The well collects crumbs, wrapping and spilt food, and its drain blocks more often than any other part we clear. The upper coil works in the warm air of the shop and relies on its glass and heaters to keep condensation off.
Worth knowing as an owner: put the night blind down at close every day, because it steadies the temperature overnight and cuts the work the compressor does. Keep stock below the marked load line so the air curtain can do its job. And wipe the glass with the cleaner the manufacturer recommends, because some chemicals craze acrylic and cloud the very panel customers look through.
Why displays struggle in summer
Every display fridge is rated for a maximum room temperature, and an open-front cabinet in a warm shop on a hot day is at its limit. If your cabinet only struggles during heatwaves, the fault may be partly the environment: a choked condenser has no margin left when the shop hits 30°C. A clean condenser, healthy fans and an intact air curtain give the cabinet its best chance, and those are exactly what we check on a visit.

What Be Cool Group customers say
Commercial Fridge Repair is part of Be Cool Group. These are reviews from the group's customers.
Great Cold Room!
We had a small but difficult installation of a coldroom in our restaurant. Ali helped us minimise the downtime of our restaurant and installed a great coldroom for us!
Best Advice & Service!
I have known Ali from ‘Be Cool Refrigeration’ for the past year and he is a committed individual running a business that provides exceptional service. I had no hesitation to recommend one of my clients to him and not only did Ali deliver on a promise of great service but also recommended the right solution for the new showroom we had acquired for my client. This solution comprising of multiple units was not only effective given the size and format of the showroom it also has reduced the cost base and carbon footprint long term. Overall Be Cool Refrigeration has the right attitude and competence to be a trusted partner for whatever A/C, refrigeration, heating or similar systems you require. You are sure to be in the best hands with the best advice and service. I cannot recommend them highly enough.Read more

The professionalism and quality of work was second to none!
We used BeCool Ltd. to install new air conditioning in one of our 800sqm London venues. Top class! This was a big project but took little over two weeks. From the initial consultation to the handover, nothing was too much. The professionalism and quality of work was second to none. Following that, we used them to upgrade the air conditioning in our second London venue. Could not fault Ali and his team and BeCool Ltd is now our go-to place for AC and refrigeration. Display fridge repair FAQs
Can you repair a serve-over counter without me losing a trading day?
Often, yes. Many counter faults, blocked drains, fans, heaters, controllers and seals, are fixed on the first visit when the part is available, and we can work around your quieter hours where the job allows it. Sealed-system work takes longer and we will tell you honestly what your fault involves before any work starts.
Why does my multideck freeze the products at the back?
Usually one of three things: the controller set point or differential has drifted, the air curtain is unbalanced so cold air pools at the back, or stock is stacked above the load line and redirecting airflow. An engineer can check all three in one visit, and none of them is expensive to put right.
Do night blinds really make a difference?
Yes. An open-front cabinet with its blind down overnight holds temperature more steadily and runs less, which is easier on the compressor and the electricity bill. If your cabinet is cold in the morning but warm by mid-afternoon, the blind is not the problem and the cabinet needs looking at.
Can you replace cracked display glass?
Flat glass door panels, usually yes. Curved serve-over glass is often a manufacturer-specific part, and on older counters it can be hard to source or cost more than the counter is worth. Send us a photo with the make and model and we will tell you honestly which situation you are in.
Do you regas display fridges?
Yes, but a cabinet that is low on refrigerant has a leak, and topping it up without finding that leak wastes your money. Our F-Gas certified engineers pressure test, repair the leak where it is economic to do so, then regas and complete the F-Gas records. Our regassing guide explains the process in more detail.
