The emergencies we get called to

Every emergency call is different, but most are one of these situations. All of them justify picking up the phone, whatever the time.

The unit is completely dead

No lights, no fans, nothing. Check the plug, the fuse and the breaker first, because a tripped supply is a two-minute fix and an engineer cannot repair your building wiring anyway. If the power is fine and the unit is still dead, call us.

Running, but warm

Fans going, compressor humming, temperature climbing. The unit is trying and losing. Keep the door shut, move high-risk stock if you have somewhere cold to put it, and call. This is the fault that catches people out, because it looks healthy from the outside.

Alarm sounding

High-temperature alarms are the controller doing its job. Silence it if you can, confirm the temperature with a probe thermometer, and treat it as real until proved otherwise. A genuine alarm with stock inside is an emergency.

Tripping the electrics or a burning smell

Leave it off. Do not keep resetting the breaker, and do not run an extension lead from another circuit as a workaround. Electrical faults are a fire risk, and they need an engineer, not persistence.

Walk-in door stuck or seal failed

A walk-in door that will not close, or a freezer door iced to its frame, turns the whole room into a fridge with the door open. Stock comes out or the room warms. Call, and do not force a frozen door, because torn seals make everything worse.

Vaccine or medical fridge drifting

Pharmacy and clinic fridges hold stock that is ruined by a few degrees in either direction and cannot always be replaced quickly. Treat any drift outside 2°C to 8°C as urgent, follow your practice's cold-chain procedure, and call us straight away.

On a visit

What happens when you call

You speak to people who know the equipment.

  1. Step 01

    We triage on the phone

You describe the fault, we ask the questions that matter, and we tell you honestly whether it sounds like an emergency call-out or a next-visit job.

  2. Step 02

    A realistic arrival window

We do not quote fixed response times. We give you a realistic arrival window for an engineer, and we keep you updated if anything changes.

  3. Step 03

    Stabilise first

The engineer's first job is to stop the situation getting worse: confirm temperatures, protect stock, and make the unit safe if there is an electrical fault.

  4. Step 04

    Repair or plan

Where the part is available, the repair happens there and then. Where it is not, you get a clear plan, a cost, and honest advice on protecting your stock in the meantime.

Who we work for

Who calls us in an emergency

Anyone whose stock is worth more than the call-out. The calls we get most at unsociable hours come from:

  • Restaurants mid-service
  • Pubs and bars before a weekend
  • Pharmacies with vaccine stock
  • Hotels with a cold room down
  • Convenience stores
  • Care homes
  • Butchers and fishmongers
  • Schools and caterers

What counts as an emergency

Simple test: does waiting put stock, safety or trading at real risk? A fridge above 8°C with meat and dairy inside, a freezer climbing past -10°C, a cold room down, a vaccine fridge drifting, a unit tripping the electrics: those are emergencies. A single upright that can be emptied into a working unit until morning usually is not, and we will tell you that honestly on the phone rather than sell you a call-out you do not need.

What to do in the first hour

The first hour decides how much stock you save. Work through this list while you wait for the engineer:

  • Keep the doors shut. A closed, full cabinet holds its temperature far longer than one that keeps getting opened to check on it.
  • Move high-risk food, meat, fish, dairy, cooked food and vaccines, to a working unit first, and record what went where.
  • Record temperatures and the time you took them, every hour. That log is your due-diligence evidence for the EHO and your insurer.
  • Check the power: plug, fuse, breaker, and look at the controller for an error code. Tell us what you find when you call.
  • Do not chip ice off the evaporator, and do not bypass the thermostat or controller. Both turn a repair into a bigger repair.
  • If the unit is tripping the electrics or smells of burning, leave it switched off.

What we need from you when you call

The more you can tell us, the better prepared the engineer arrives. Have these ready if you can:

  • The make and model from the rating plate inside or behind the unit. A photo of the plate on your phone is ideal.
  • What the unit is doing, and when it started: dead, warm, noisy, alarming, leaking, tripping the power.
  • The temperature now, from a probe if you have one, and what it should be.
  • Access and parking: loading bay, alley, stairs, entry codes, and any restrictions on arrival times.
  • Whether stock is still inside, and whether you have working space to move it to.

Common questions

Emergency fridge repair FAQs

How soon can an engineer get to me?

We do not quote fixed response times, because honesty beats a promise nobody can keep at 2am on a bank holiday. Call us and we will give you a realistic arrival window based on where the engineers are and what your fault involves, and we will keep you updated if anything changes.

Do you charge more at night or on weekends?

Out-of-hours work is charged differently from a daytime visit, and we explain exactly how our charges work on the phone before anything is booked. You will know where you stand before an engineer sets off, with no surprises on the invoice.

Should I switch the unit off while I wait?

Only if it is tripping the electrics, smelling of burning or leaking water onto electrics. Otherwise leave it running with the doors shut, because even a struggling unit is doing some cooling, and we may be able to get more out of it once we arrive.

Can you save the stock?

Often, yes, if you act in the first hour: doors shut, high-risk food moved to a working unit, temperatures logged. Chilled food that has stayed below 8°C and frozen food that still has ice crystals is usually fine. When you call, tell us the temperatures and times and we will talk it through honestly.

Which areas do you cover out of hours?

The same areas we cover in the day: Greater London, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Surrey and Berkshire. If you are close to the edge of those areas, call and we will tell you straight away whether we can get an engineer to you.

Unit down right now?

Call 020 3488 1889 with the fault and your postcode. We will give you a realistic arrival window and tell you what to do with your stock while you wait.
